We all have credit cards issues. It is always interesting to always hear everyone complaining on how they got themselves into too much debt. Most of the problems have to do with credit card companies themselves but blaming only credit card companies is in itself dishonest.
Most of the credit problems we have are self inflicted and can be avoided by all just by following a few tips
1. Get Your Credit Reports
It should be the law for everyone to get a copy of their credit reports at least once a year. Credit reports are meant to track all your credit activities. It is wrong to imagine that since you have a low credit rating, you do not need to check on your credit report. I have seen cases where a clients credit rating was low precisely because, a company reported that they had not paid a few bills for a few months.
It is essential to track what your creditors are reporting about you so you can quickly make any changes. Some credit companies even go to the extent of advising you what you can do if your credit rating is low. I believe it is also very motivating to work at getting at a particular credit rating. But you will not get that motivated if you have no idea what others are thinking about your credit.
2. Alerting Your Creditors
Everyone gets into financial hardship. Refusing to answer your creditor’s phone calls is a guaranteed way to get them to report negatively about you.If you even have a hint of some bad financial times coming up, do yourself a favor and call your creditor. This is especially important if you have a mortgage. Call and figure a new payment plan before the problem arises.
You are sure to get better customer support before the problem occurs than after you have not answered their phone calls for 4 weeks.
3. Not Budgeting
If getting a credit report is essential , a budget is mandatory. Make a point to always get yourself a personal budget that works. If you do not have a budget, you will never know that you are way over your head with credit. A budget will do two things
- It will alert you of impending bills which you can plan for
- It will keep you disciplined not to use your credit card on unnecessary expenditure.
4. Balance Transfers
I have used balance transfers to save myself a few dollars. However, trying to game the system can also get you into unnecessary debt. Make sure you understand the difference between an introductory offer, the period for the introductory offer and the rate that will be used after the period is over.
You should try as much as possible to pay off any balances during this introductory offer period. Most of the time, you end in a worse position than you were in when you started if you do not payoff any balances during this period.
5.Making Late Credit Payments
Of all the things you do not wish to do when you have any credit, you do not want to pay your creditors late. One late payment is the beginning of a larger trend and is immediately paid by a bad credit report. Once you are late with one payment, most of your creditors will make it more expensive for you to get new credit.
It is also a very bad habit as you might think that you can get away with it.
